What Is a Clutch?

A clutch is the component that connects and disconnects your engine power to the gearbox. In simple terms, it lets you change gear smoothly by temporarily separating the engine from the wheels. When the clutch wears out or develops a fault, you’ll often feel it through slipping, judder, poor gear changes, or unusual noises.

When you press the clutch
The engine is disconnected from the gearbox so you can change gears without grinding or strain.
When you release the clutch
Power flows back through the gearbox to the wheels and the vehicle moves forward.
Why clutches fail
Wear and tear, heavy traffic, towing, riding the clutch pedal, hydraulic faults, or related drivetrain issues.
Common signs your clutch needs attention

If you notice these symptoms, it’s worth getting checked early. Leaving it too long can make the job more expensive and can risk breakdown or further damage.

Symptoms
Slipping under acceleration • clutch judder • burning smell • high biting point • difficult gear selection • noises when pressing the pedal
Related issues that feel like a clutch
Gearbox linkage problems • mounts • hydraulic faults • flywheel issues (where applicable) • drivetrain vibration
